Grazing System Information - Vermont NRCSThis web page provides tools to help the conservation planner, farmer, and consumer understand and promote the vitality of grass-based farming in Vermont.
This webpage is intended to promote the concept that grazing should be a first management choice, not a last resort. The page will be continually updated to include tools such as online grazing courses, websites that focus on grazing and innovations in grassland agriculture, example grazing plans and maps, as well as information about availability of grants and financial assistance to apply and promote grass based farming. Links, references and facts about current policy and rules in USDA NRCS programs will also be included. New links and information will be added to this page on a routine basis. The Forage Species Selection Tool is made up of several programs which access numerous databases to provide forage species suggestions for New York State, taking into consideration both the available soil type and the intended forage use. Soil type can be selected from a list, or the program can estimate soil type based on zip code, county, and basic soil characteristics.
Vegspec is a web-based decision support system that assists land managers in the planning and design of vegetative establishment practices. VegSpec utilizes soil, plant, and climate data to select plant species that are (1) site-specifically adapted, (2) suitable for the selected practice, and (3) appropriate for the purposes and objectives for which the planting is intended. The GRP was authorized in the 2002 Farm Bill with the intent of protecting grasslands which play a vital role in protecting water quality and providing wildlife habitat. Priority grasslands targeted include grasslands threatened by both agricultural and non-agricultural development, grasslands that provide habitat to threatened and endangered plant and animal species, and grasslands currently used for grazing operations.
