Conservation Security Program (CSP)

2006 Watersheds Announced

Portions of the Hudson - Hoosic Watershed have been selected for 2006 Conservation Security Program (CSP) sign up.The Hudson Hoosic 12 digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) in Vermont includes the Walloomsac River – headwaters to South Stream, the South Stream, the Batten Kill – headwaters to Munson Brook, the Batten Kill – Munson Brook to Roaring Branch, and the Roaring Branch. There are approximately 9 dairy farms located in this watershed. Other agricultural operations include hay, beef, vegetable, and horse.

CSP is a voluntary conservation program and has a unique role among USDA programs. It identifies and rewards those farmers and ranchers who meet the highest standards of conservation and environmental management on their operations. It creates powerful incentives for other producers to meet those same standards of conservation performance on their operations, and provides public benefits for generations to come.

More 2006 CSP information has been posted as of 2/22/2006.

 2005 CSP Contracts Awarded

Nationally, about 12,700 CSP contracts were awarded in 2005 with payments to exceed $1 billion over 10 years. The contracts cover 9 million acres of private land in 220 watersheds. Vermont received a total of 10 contracts in two watersheds. Almost $200,000 in CSP payments will be distributed to these landowners/producers in 2005.

Selected Vermont watersheds for 2005 include the Otter Creek in Addison and Rutland Counties, and the West River in Windham County, which also stretches into southwestern New Hampshire.
