June 5, 2011 -Vermont NRCS employees wanted Regional Conservationist for the East Region, Leonard Jordan, to really see all Vermont has to offer in the few days he had to spend in the state. Since the senior leadership member had not been to Vermont before, it was important for him to leave with a keen sense of why the landscape here is unique, beautiful, and challenging, for both producers and NRCS staff that plan and implement conservation improvements. Mr. Jordan spent his first two days in Vermont at the NEASDA meeting (Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture). This event was attended by most State Commissioners of Agriculture, many non-governmental organizations, and State Conservationists from Vermont, ... NRCS staff members scheduled a nearly two-day tour immediately following the NEASDA meeting. This tour highlighted many of the major project issues and important work that is going on around the state. Key partners met the tour along the route, providing helpful information to NRCS leadership and demonstrating the coordination alive between Vermont agricultural partners. The sites visited include included projects illustrating conservation in forestry, water quality research and planning, organic farming, wetland restoration, farmland preservation, innovative energy projects, fruits and vegetable operations, and small and medium size dairy operations.
