Generalized State Soil Map for Vermont -- STATSGO

Sample of STATSGO dat in south-east corner of state

Summary - what is STATSGO?

Vermont STATSGO (State Soil Geographic Database) information includes a digital soil map of the state of Vermont (known as spatial data) and the accompanying soil properties and interpretations database (known as tabular data or attribute data). The STATSGO map is made by generalizing the detailed soil survey data. This data is primarily used in GIS applications. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) allow the combination of computerized maps; these systems are used for data input, analysis and display.

The STATSGO user should be knowledgeable of the structure of the soil database and familiar with GIS technology.

The STATSGO data uses a more generalized mapping scale than SSURGO (the detailed, county-level soil survey). The minimum area mapped is about 1,544 acres; as opposed to SSURGO which is about about 3 acres. This level of mapping is designed to be used for broad planning and management uses covering state, regional and multi-state areas.

To download STATSGO data:

go to National Cartography and Geospatial Center site

This data is available at 1:250,000 scale. It uses Albers Equal Area projection.
